Lead-acid vs lithium: the choice that matters most
Before comparing brands, the most important decision is technology. Lead-acid batteries (tubular and VRLA) cost less upfront but last only 3 to 5 years and require maintenance. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries cost significantly more upfront but last 8 to 12 years, are maintenance-free, and handle Indian heat better. Over a 10-year period, LiFePO4 typically works out cheaper despite the higher initial price because you avoid one full lead-acid replacement cycle.
Brand comparison: lead-acid options
| Brand | Technology | Approx Price (150Ah) | Lifespan | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luminous | Tubular lead-acid | Rs 14,000-18,000 | 4-5 years | Budget backup, existing inverter systems |
| Amaron | VRLA lead-acid | Rs 15,000-20,000 | 3-4 years | Low maintenance, moderate backup |
| Okaya | Tubular lead-acid | Rs 13,000-17,000 | 4-5 years | Value option, wide service network |
| Exide | Tubular lead-acid | Rs 14,000-19,000 | 4-5 years | Established brand, good warranty claim process |
Brand comparison: lithium options
| Brand | Technology | Approx Price (5 kWh) | Lifespan | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luminous Li-On (NMC) | Lithium NMC | Rs 60,000-80,000 | 6-8 years | Transition from lead-acid, trusted brand |
| Livguard LiFePO4 | Lithium Iron Phosphate | Rs 75,000-95,000 | 8-10 years | Home solar storage, safety-conscious |
| Waaree BESS | LiFePO4 | Rs 80,000-1,10,000 | 10-12 years | Solar-integrated storage, ALMM manufacturer |
| Jakson LiFePO4 | Lithium Iron Phosphate | Rs 85,000-1,20,000 | 10-12 years | Premium reliability, B2B track record |

Battery storage is not eligible for PM Surya Ghar subsidy. The subsidy applies only to the solar panel system. Budget your battery purchase separately and do not factor subsidy into battery cost calculations.

Frequently asked questions
Which solar battery is best for homes in North India?
For North Indian homes where power cuts are 2 to 4 hours per day, a LiFePO4 lithium battery in the 5 to 7.5 kWh range from Livguard or Waaree is the best long-term choice. It handles the heat better than lead-acid, lasts 8 to 10 years without maintenance, and provides reliable backup during cuts.
Can I add a battery to my existing on-grid solar system?
Only if your inverter is hybrid-compatible. Standard string inverters cannot connect directly to battery storage. If your inverter is a hybrid model (Growatt MIN TL or Sungrow SH series), battery addition is possible. Otherwise, you need a new hybrid inverter, which adds Rs 20,000 to Rs 35,000 to the cost.
How many hours of backup does a 5 kWh battery provide?
It depends on your load. A 5 kWh battery running a typical home with 2 fans, LED lights, and a refrigerator (total load approximately 500W) gives around 8 to 10 hours of backup. With AC running at 1.5 kW, backup drops to 3 to 3.5 hours. Calculate your actual critical load before deciding battery size.
Are lithium batteries safe for homes?
LiFePO4 lithium batteries are considered the safest lithium chemistry and are recommended for residential use. They do not catch fire under normal operating conditions and have built-in Battery Management Systems (BMS) that prevent overcharge, over-discharge, and overheating. Ensure the battery has BMS and a proper enclosure when installed.
