Why the 30-day window matters

The net metering application must be filed within 30 days of your solar installation being completed. This is not a suggestion , it is a process requirement under most state DISCOM regulations. Delaying beyond 30 days can cause complications with your PM Surya Ghar subsidy claim, since MNRE expects the net metering application to follow installation promptly. File on the same day installation is complete if possible.

For PM Surya Ghar applicants: use the portal

1
Log into pmsuryaghar.gov.inGo to your application dashboard. After installation, the status should show “Installation Complete” or your installer would have filed the completion report.
2
Upload installation completion certificateYour installer provides this document after completing the installation. It includes system details, panel models, inverter specification, and installation date.
3
Submit net metering application through portalThe portal routes your net metering request to your DISCOM automatically. No separate application to the DISCOM is needed for PM Surya Ghar applicants.
4
Schedule DISCOM inspectionAfter technical review, schedule the site inspection via the portal dashboard. Be present at home on the appointment date.
5
Pay security deposit when bidirectional meter is installedDISCOM engineer installs the bidirectional net meter. Pay the state-specified security deposit at this stage. Keep the receipt.
6
Receive commissioning certificateAfter meter installation the DISCOM issues the commissioning certificate. This completes the final subsidy disbursement process on the portal.

Frequently asked questions

My installer says they will handle net metering. Do I still need to do anything?
Confirm what “handle” means specifically. The installer can file on your behalf, coordinate with DISCOM, and be present at the inspection. However, the Aadhaar OTP verification on the portal is yours alone. Ask your installer to walk you through each step so you know the status at every stage.

What if I miss the 30-day net metering application window?
Apply immediately regardless of the delay. Include a written explanation of the reason for the delay when submitting. Some DISCOMs are flexible for reasonable delays. For PM Surya Ghar applicants, contact the MNRE helpline at 1800-180-3333 and explain the situation before assuming you have lost eligibility.

Can I apply for net metering before installation is complete?
No. The net metering application requires the installation completion certificate from your installer, which is only issued after installation is done. The DISCOM also needs to inspect the actual installed system, not a planned one.

How long until I get my first net metering bill after commissioning?
Your next monthly bill after commissioning will typically be the first one showing net metering. If the meter was installed mid-billing-cycle, the first bill may only partially reflect solar generation. The second bill after commissioning is usually the first complete net metered bill.
