Why monitoring matters

A solar system with a silent fault can lose 20 to 30 percent of its output without any visible sign. No lights go off, no alarm sounds. The only way to catch underperformance early is to track generation data regularly and compare it against expected output. Most inverters now include Wi-Fi monitoring with free apps that make this simple.

How to monitor using your inverter app

1
Download the manufacturer appGrowatt: ShinePhone. Sungrow: iSolarCloud. Havells: Havells Solar. Delta: mTransportation. Your installer should have helped set this up at commissioning.
2
Check daily generation first thing each morningThe app shows yesterday’s total generation in kWh. Note this number. For a 3 kW system in a sunny North Indian city, expect 10 to 18 units on a clear day.
3
Compare same-day generation week over weekCompare last Monday’s generation with this Monday’s generation (accounting for weather). A consistent 15% or more drop on similar weather days signals a problem.
4
Check monthly total against your electricity billYour bill should show reduced grid import matching your solar generation. If your bill has not reduced proportionally, there may be a metering or system issue.

Expected daily output by city and system size

City 2 kW (sunny day) 3 kW (sunny day) 5 kW (sunny day)
Jaipur 9-11 units 14-17 units 23-28 units
Delhi NCR 8-10 units 12-15 units 20-26 units
Lucknow 7-9 units 11-14 units 19-24 units
Agra 8-11 units 13-16 units 21-27 units
Chandigarh 7-9 units 11-14 units 18-23 units
Dehradun 6-8 units 10-13 units 17-22 units
⚠️
Output varies by 30-40% between a clear summer day and a cloudy winter day. Always compare against similar weather days when checking for underperformance, not against an average number.

Warning signs that need attention

1
Zero output on a clear daySystem has completely stopped producing. Check if inverter is on, then call your installer same day.

2
Output consistently 20% below expected for the seasonCould be dust, shading from new construction, a faulty string, or inverter degradation. Get a technical check.

Clean panels first

3
Inverter shows fault code or error lightNote the exact error code from the app or display and report it to your installer. Do not attempt to reset without guidance.

Note code, call

4
Electricity bill not reduced despite solar being commissionedCould be a net metering setup issue or that most of your consumption is at night without offsetting daytime generation.

Frequently asked questions

My inverter does not have a Wi-Fi module. How do I monitor?
Older or basic inverters have an LCD display that shows daily and total generation. Check this each morning and note it in a simple notebook or phone notes app. Compare monthly totals against expected output. Some inverters support a retrofit Wi-Fi dongle that you can add later.

Is there a third-party app that works with all inverter brands?
SolarEdge and SolarMan have multi-brand monitoring capabilities. However, most manufacturers require their own app for full data access. Your installer can recommend the right monitoring setup based on which inverter is installed.

How much output should I expect in winter vs summer?
In North India, winter generation is typically 30 to 40 percent lower than peak summer generation. This is due to shorter days and lower sun angle, not temperature. Solar panels actually perform better in cooler temperatures. January and February are the lowest output months in most North Indian cities.

The app shows generation but my bill is still high. Why?
This is usually a timing mismatch. Solar generates during the day when you may not be home. Your high consumption happens at night from grid power. The bill should still be lower from day-time offset via net metering. If it is not, check that your net meter is correctly configured with your DISCOM.
