Why panel quality matters more in India
India’s climate is harsh on solar panels. High temperatures, dust, humidity, and monsoon rain put more stress on panels than moderate European or American climates. A panel rated for 25 years in lab conditions may degrade faster if it has poor temperature coefficient, inadequate anti-soiling coating, or weak junction box sealing. Knowing what to check protects your 25-year investment.
There are two parallel quality checks needed: whether the panel qualifies for PM Surya Ghar subsidy (ALMM check), and whether the panel is actually worth installing regardless of subsidy (technical quality check). Both matter independently.
Step 1: ALMM verification (subsidy eligibility)

Get the exact panel make and model from your installerAsk for the full model number, not just the brand name. Example: “Waaree WS-540M” not just “Waaree panel.” The exact model is needed for ALMM verification.

Search on MNRE ALMM list at mnre.gov.inGo to MNRE website, find the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers. Search by manufacturer name or model number. If not listed, the panel does not qualify for PM Surya Ghar subsidy.

Check the list update dateThe ALMM list is updated periodically. Verify using the most recent version, ideally within 30 days of your planned installation date. Panels can be added or removed.

Visual inspection at delivery: what to check

Check serial numbers match the delivery challanEach panel has a unique serial number on the back. Verify all serial numbers match what is listed on the supply invoice.

Are Indian panel brands like Waaree and Vikram Solar as good as foreign brands?
Yes, for most residential applications. Indian manufacturers like Waaree, Vikram Solar, and Adani Solar produce panels with comparable efficiency to international brands. They have the added advantage of local warranty service centres and faster replacement in case of claims. All are ALMM-listed and meet IEC standards.
What is the difference between Mono PERC and TOPCon panels?
Mono PERC panels are the current standard with 19-21% efficiency and 0.5-0.6% annual degradation. TOPCon is the next generation with 21-23% efficiency and lower degradation around 0.4%. TOPCon costs 15-25% more but produces more power per square metre and lasts better over 25 years. For rooftops with limited space, TOPCon gives more power.
How do I know if a panel is counterfeit or mislabelled?
Ask for the manufacturer test report (flash report) for your specific batch of panels. This document shows the actual measured output of the panels at the factory. A legitimate supplier provides this without hesitation. Also cross-check the serial number on the MNRE ALMM list.
What happens if my panels fail within the warranty period?
Contact the manufacturer directly with your purchase invoice, installation date, and the serial number of the failed panel. If the manufacturer has a local presence, they send a service engineer. If not, the installer is responsible for managing the claim. This is why choosing a manufacturer with a strong India presence matters.
