Solar Plus Battery Storage India: When the Combination Makes Financial Sense and When It Does Not

On-grid onlyBest ROI no battery
Right questionCut length first
The honest answer: on-grid without battery usually wins on ROI
For most Indian homeowners in urban and semi-urban areas with grid reliability of 18 to 22 hours per day, a standard on-grid solar system without battery gives better return on investment than a solar plus battery combination. The battery adds Rs 75,000 to Rs 1,50,000 to the upfront cost and extends the payback period by 1 to 2 years without proportionally increasing savings in areas with reliable grid supply.
The case for battery changes when power cuts exceed 4 hours per day, when your critical loads like medical equipment or home office cannot tolerate outages, or when your area has completely unreliable grid supply. In these specific situations, battery backup has genuine value beyond the economics.

Solar plus battery: what the combination costs
| Configuration | System Cost | Subsidy | Net Cost | Monthly Saving | Payback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 kW solar, no battery | Rs 1,20,000-1,50,000 | Rs 78,000 | Rs 42,000-72,000 | Rs 1,800-2,500 | 2-4 years |
| 3 kW solar + 5 kWh lithium | Rs 2,10,000-2,80,000 | Rs 78,000 | Rs 1,32,000-2,02,000 | Rs 1,800-2,500 + backup | 5-8 years |
| 3 kW solar + 10 kWh lithium | Rs 2,80,000-3,60,000 | Rs 78,000 | Rs 2,02,000-2,82,000 | Rs 1,800-2,500 + full backup | 7-10 years |
💡
Install solar on-grid first. After 6 to 12 months of data from your monitoring app, you will know your actual generation, consumption pattern, and when power cuts typically occur. That data makes a much more informed battery sizing decision than guessing upfront.

Technical requirements for adding battery to solar
1
You need a hybrid inverter, not a standard on-grid inverterStandard string inverters cannot connect to battery storage. If you want battery now or later, specify a hybrid inverter from day one. Replacing the inverter later adds Rs 20,000-35,000 extra cost.
2
Choose LiFePO4 lithium for Indian conditionsLiFePO4 batteries handle India’s heat better than NMC lithium and far better than lead-acid. The higher upfront cost is justified by 8 to 12 year lifespan versus 3 to 5 years for lead-acid.
3
Size the battery for your critical load, not your full loadA battery covering lights, fans, and refrigerator (500W load) for 6 hours needs 3 kWh. A battery covering AC at 1.5 kW needs 9 kWh for 6 hours. Size for critical loads only to manage cost.
Frequently asked questions
Will adding battery storage affect my PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
Battery storage is not eligible for PM Surya Ghar subsidy. The subsidy covers solar panels, inverter, and installation only. The battery cost is entirely self-funded. However, adding battery does not disqualify your solar system from subsidy. You get subsidy on the solar components and fund the battery separately.
Can I add a battery to my existing on-grid solar system?
Only if you have a hybrid-compatible inverter. Check your inverter model. Growatt MIN TL-X, Sungrow SH series, and Delta Hybrid series support battery add-on. If your inverter is a standard on-grid model, you need a new hybrid inverter, which adds Rs 20,000 to Rs 35,000 to the upgrade cost.
How many hours of backup does a 5 kWh battery provide?
For a critical home load of 500W (2 fans, lights, refrigerator), a 5 kWh battery gives 8 to 10 hours backup. With a 1.5 kW AC added, backup drops to 3 hours. Always calculate against your actual critical load, not your total home load.
Is it better to install a generator or a solar plus battery system?
For homes with 2 to 4 hour daily cuts, solar plus battery beats generator on multiple dimensions. No fuel cost, no noise, no maintenance. Generators typically cost Rs 30,000 to Rs 80,000 plus Rs 400 to Rs 700 per hour in fuel for a 2 kVA unit. Over 5 years, the operating cost of a generator often exceeds the cost difference between on-grid solar and solar plus battery.
